The decline of cognitive abilities is a concern for many people, especially with age, but eating nuts can help slow it down.

Researchers at the University of South Australia found that eating nuts on a daily basis could increase brain function, the Mirror newspaper reported.

In the study, researchers followed the effect of eating nuts in 4822 participants aged over 55 years.

The results showed that those who ate more than 10 grams of nuts per day, functioned brain functions better, including thinking, memory and logical skills.

"Eating 10 grams of nuts, or two teaspoons, would improve brain function for the elderly by as much as 60 percent," said lead author Ming Li, who led the study, compared with those who did not eat nuts.

Eating nuts regularly can delay normal cognitive decline for two years, she said.

The researchers believe that the effect of nuts may be linked to the contents of anti-inflammatory and oxidative substances.

"Nuts are known to be rich in healthy fats, protein and fiber with dietary properties that can lower cholesterol and improve mental health," Dr Lee said.
